Frequently Asked Questions
Product Use & Effectiveness
How do I use the body spray and mouth spray?
Apply the Body Spray to skin and hair before swimming — it creates a barrier and helps neutralize chlorine on contact. You can also reapply after swimming and rinsing off.
The Mouth Spray is used orally, before or after swimming, to support gentle detox from chlorine that’s absorbed internally.
Do I really need both sprays?
Yes — they’re designed to work together for inside-and-out support.
The skin is the body’s largest organ and absorbs what’s placed on it. Our Body Spray helps neutralize chlorine on contact, turning it into harmless compounds while restoring moisture and nutrients to the skin and beyond.
But chlorine exposure doesn’t stop at the surface. Kids often swallow water, get it in their eyes, or breathe it in. That’s where our Mouth Spray comes in — a gentle homeopathic formula that supports detoxification from the inside out.
Together, they offer a more complete approach to chlorine protection.
When should I apply the spray—before or after swimming?
For best results, apply the Body Spray before swimming. You can reapply after showering to support recovery. The Mouth Spray can be used both before and after chlorine exposure — whatever fits your routine best.
How long does one bottle last?
That depends on frequency of use, but most families get about 1–2 months of regular use per bottle. The mouth spray lasts longer since it uses small doses.
Can adults use it too?
Absolutely! The formula is safe and effective for all ages — many adults with chlorine sensitivities use it and love it.
Do I need it if I’m swimming in a saltwater pool?
We suggest using the spray even in saltwater pools — while they use less, there is often still chlorine present.
Homeopathy & How It Works
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a natural system of medicine that’s been around since the 1700s. It uses highly diluted substances to gently support the body’s natural healing response. Think of it as a way to help the body “remember” how to respond to something — in this case, chlorine.
What is chlorinum and why is it in the mouth spray?
Chlorinum is a homeopathic preparation made from chlorine. In homeopathy, using a tiny amount of a substance that causes symptoms can help the body rebalance and detox from it. It’s included in our Mouth Spray to support the body in recovering from chlorine exposure internally.
Will the mouth spray interfere with other medications?
Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe and unlikely to interact with medications, but it’s always best to check with your healthcare provider if you have concerns or are managing a complex medical situation.
Sensory & Special Needs
Is it safe for kids with autism, PANS/PANDAS, or sensory sensitivities?
Yes — that’s exactly who this was made for. We created SwimShield for families like ours, where chlorine often leads to flares, regressions, or skin reactions. The formulas are gentle, and free of common irritants.
Does it have a strong scent or texture?
Nope. Both sprays are light and fast-absorbing. They’re designed to be as sensory-friendly as possible.
Will it sting broken skin or rashes?
We’ve chosen soothing, gentle ingredients to avoid stinging. If skin is very inflamed or broken, do a small patch test first to be sure it feels comfortable.
About the Brand
Why did you create The SwimShield Co.?
Because I saw firsthand how chlorine affected my daughter with PANS. Swimming was something she loved — but the aftermath just wasn’t worth it. I needed a solution that was simple, safe, and actually worked. So I made it.
Is this a mom-owned brand?
Yes! SwimShield was created by a mom who gets it — and who wanted to make swimming less stressful for families managing sensitivities.

Safety & Ingredients
Is this safe for babies and toddlers?
Yes — it’s gentle, non-toxic, and formulated with sensitive skin in mind. We specifically selected a natural, baby-safe preservative (Leucidal SF Complete) rather than another commonly used preservative, Geogard ECT; it contains salicylic acid, and is not recommended for children under the age of three.
As always, do a small patch test first and check with your pediatrician if you have specific concerns.
Are the ingredients clean/natural/non-toxic?
Yes. Our ingredients are thoughtfully chosen to be effective and as natural and minimal as possible. No harsh chemicals, no synthetic fragrances, and nothing we wouldn’t use on our own kids.
What preservative do you use, and why?
Great question — and an important one.
We use a preservative for two key reasons:
Safety – Water-based products can easily grow mold, bacteria, and other microbes without proper preservation.
Stability – Our sprays are made to go wherever you do — including hot, sunny pool days. A preservative helps keep the formula stable and effective, even in warm temps.
We chose a gentle, minimal preservative to ensure both safety and skin-friendliness.
Is it safe if my child accidentally swallows some?
Yes — the ingredients are safe for incidental ingestion in the small amounts that might happen during use. Of course, it’s not meant to be consumed in large quantities, so keep it out of reach between uses.
Is it gluten-free/nut-free/cruelty-free?
Yes! Our formulas are gluten-free, nut-free, and never tested on animals.
I don’t recognize all of the ingredients. What are they and why are they included in the body spray formula?
As a mom who reads all the labels, it was a priority to ensure the formula was made with safe, non-synthetic ingredients.
Sodium Ascorbate: chlorine neutralizer
Magnesium Chloride: restorative mineral
Iodine: thyroid and immune support
Glutathione: supports detox
Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside: allows the use of essential oils
Leucidal SF: preservative made of fermented coconut and radish
Glycerin: skin soothing, made from coconut
Gluconolactone: Chelator, humectant, antioxidant, and preservative booster made out of corn; ECOCERT-approved ingredient, and Whole Foods has deemed the ingredient acceptable in its body care quality standards.
Gluconolactone is a naturally occurring substance found in honey, fruit juices, and many fermented products
Gluconolactone is known for being gentle and is often recommended for sensitive skin types
Storage, Expiration, and Other Logistics
How should I store it?
Keep it in a cool, dry place when not in use. It’s fine to toss in your pool bag or car for the day — we made it with busy parents in mind.
Does it expire?
Our products are best used within 12 months of opening. Check the bottle for a “best by” date.
Is it travel-friendly/TSA approved?
Yes! All of our bottles are TSA-compliant and travel-friendly — perfect for hotel pools, road trips, and vacations.
Can I keep it in a hot car or beach bag?
Short-term? Absolutely! However, long-term heat exposure can reduce effectiveness, so it’s best not to store it in the car for weeks at a time in the middle of the summer. But for a day at the pool? You’re good to go.
